URGH! After breaking through the 4k ceiling I genuinely
believed I would hack through to 5k. Reality loomed across the horizon as I had
4 losing days on the trot. Aintree produced some wonderful moments but with it
brought further controversy about the National. It’s never pleasant to witness
the death of an animal but need we forget the two heart attacks on the football
pitch, deaths on the ski slope, brain injuries caused by head trauma. I’m sure
there are some measures we can take to make it safer, but it will be at the
expense of a great spectacle. This is a continuous argument that will continue
rage for a while yet. Interesting that the increased whipping rules that were
brought in, were, with the threat of jockey striking and the realisation that
it fundamentally changed the way races panned out, somewhat reversed. Whatever
the outcome, let’s just pray it’s common ground and common sense.
Just Punchestown and the Scottish Grand National to consider
from a jumps perspective, before we plough into the flat season! Will Frankel
run again? Will Black Caviar rock up to Ascot? Who will be the dark horses?
Will the Goodolphin team dominate proceedings or will it be the Ballydole team?
So many more questions will soon be answered…
