Bets 30/06/2012

Chester 2.40 – Johnston’s front runners appear to be going well this season and having won this race twice before odd he has a 6/1 and 14/1 chance in the race. Can’t work out which one to go for, and really not how I should be selecting my winner! However I like Hyperlink @ 14/1

Chester 3.45 – If Amy Ryan can tame Zakreet he must have a great chance @ 10/1. Fast or Free franks form as well.

Chester 4.15 – Church Music has been involved in a couple of good races and reckon has a better chance than 15/2.

Chester 4.50 – If the BHA have their ratings correct Just Lille should win this. Not sure why being dropped in trip but should be just as effective.

Chester 5.25 – Can’t choose between Clerks Choice and Solaras Exhibition. Rf/c?

Newcastle 2.15 – Tom Pricewise Segal has tipped Maarek @ 9/2. This will be a cracking race. Mayson offers a bit of value @ 13/2.

Newcastle 3.20 - Segal has tipped Ile De Re @ 6/1. IDR won me the Chester Cup and would also have been my pick today. Surprised I didn’t back Ante Post!

Newcastle 3.55 – Hmm, probably should avoid this, but drawn to Brae Hill @12/1

Newcastle 4.55 – Lexi’s Boy hacked up the other day and in that race Union Island wasn’t too far off 9/4 not great value though.

Newmarket 2.00 – Michelangelo

Newmarket 3.00 – Dandino

Newmarket 3.30 – Libranno

Newmarket 4.40 – Long shot of day goes to Classic Punch 28/1

5.00pm Update...

5.55 Curragh - Segal has tipped Sennie. I've got a Segal Treble on this would be mint!

Irish Derby - No need to get involved, but all revolves around Camelot!

6.15pm Udpate....damn that Segal Treble would have landed me £1200!!! I still backed a lot a winners though, and as a mood a dabble at Donny...

Doncaster 6.40 - Azzurra Du Caprio 12/1. Ran well here last year and looks set to go well again.

Wowzers, was not expecting 10 minutes research to turn into such easy money yesterday. Shame there were no doubles or trebles placed! Boooo.

If Newcastle goes ahead Newcastle 3.00 – Prince of Sorrento 4/1 is in solid mood and form boosted by Fennell Bay. Suits Me might be hard to peg back if allowed an easy run so worth an e/w @ 9/1

Warick 3.40 – This is a toughy. I can’t pick between the proven ones as the ground or might bank on the improver using another free bet this time from Paddy Power. Poisson d’Or 12/1 looks like one to watch out for. She might find this tough in this company and draw won’t help, but I can’t find anything I like and Guest has a blinding record here.

White wash on Sunday. 3/3 losers. Still haven’t had a chance to update blog with punting excapades from Ascot. Thankfully my deets are stored online for years, but I’ll make some time at the weekend to do it!

Salisbury 4.25 – Sticking with Gosden/Buick theme on Trade Commissioner at 3/1

Salisbury 4.55 – Rule Book is in on an okay mark and 11/2 is goodish value

Carlisle 3.00 – Cool Marble didn’t like York and potentially better on softer ground, therefore at 14/1 looks puntable

Carlisle 3.30 – Karaka Jack 7/1 has decent form lines

Carlisle 4.05 – I have no idea why but 888.com keep giving me free bets. Just got another £40! So Lexi’s Boy 3/1 it is...

Bets 23/06/2012 - Royal Ascot Day 5

A Tom Pricewise Segal double yesterday kept me from drowning and unsurprisingly with these huge fields and changing ground at Ascot I’m not doing that well. Roughly another £50 down yesterday, but won’t have time to update until tomorrow. Newfangled looked insane yesterday, Gatewood’s form continues to bolster, notes about Stoute over 1m have been scrapped, at hats off to Buick! Today it’s really all about Black Caviar and I’m lucky enough to go and watch her first hand. Let’s hope the rain f’s off.

Ascot 2.30 – Always hard with the newbies, but based on what’s on paper looks like it’s between the top 3. The favourite, Move To Strike 15/8 has won a decent race by 9 lengths, Segal has tipped Tha’ir 7/1 and Hughes has tipped Jalaa 9/2. New Approach looks to make it a hatrick with Tha’ir after babies Dawn Approach and Newfangled won.

Ascot 3.05 – This will be a fantastic race. Aiken is going to be popular with the Gosden/Buick combo. Segal has tipped Dunaden 8/1. Red Cadeaux will surely win a big prize again at some point, but just wonder whether 16f is a better trip. And then there’s Sea Moon as well. Wow.

Ascot 3.45 – BLACK CAVIAR is all set to romp home with Moonlight Cloud and Society Rock following her home.

Ascot 4.25 – Segal has tipped the highly fancied Lightening Cloud 14/1 and Waffle 18/1. Dependant on draw my big bet has to be Mac’s Power. If he is on the right side of things this year then he has a solid chance. And surely Fanshawe has to win something this year?! I’ve back Medicean Man 20/1 Antepost

Ascot 5.00 – Segal has gone for Hammerfest. License to Till 16/1 won me a decent prize before and after Fennell Bay won for Johnston the other day I don’t want to miss out again. That Gatweood form is looking mighty strong. Cambourne will again be popular with the punters with the Buick/Gosden combo.

Ascot 5.35 – Time to kill the bookies with last race of day. Overturn and Simenon forecast.

Ayr 1.55 – Hazelrigg had good C&D form and form behind JnJ.

Bets 22/06/2012 - Royal Ascot Day 4

Eek. A lot of rain and a lot of placed horses going on yesterday. The favourites were stinkers yesterday and I’m gutted I didn’t back Colour Vision or Fennell Bay. But that is punting. Hindsight is easy. Thought I was going to pull off a massive win with Rougemont, but I’ll take console in the fact he was definitely overpriced. Either way I definitely lost about £100 yesterday. Today’s ground throws up plenty to think about…

Ascot 2.30 – Wouldn’t know where to start with this one, so will just follow Segal. The Gold Cheongsam 11/1. No idea why but meh. Random punt on All on Red 40/1, who will love this horrendous weather.

Ascot 3.05 – Think this one is between Thomas Chippendale 8/1 and Astrology. The other’s are taken out on their form behind Astrology or the ground. On official ratings Chippendale has a lot to find but Segal has gone in this direction as well

Ascot 3.45 – I think Homecoming Queen 7/2 is probably a good thing with a current conditions?

Ascot 4.25 – Beachfire 25/1? Thank you very much. Last year’s easy winner is technically only couple lengths worse off. Qaraaba 10/1 looks a decent bet as well on this soft ground and well picked out by Segal

Ascot 5.00 – I’ve made a note to avoid Stoute runners over 1m at Ascot, yet Segal has tipped Estimate. I like the look of Yadzi 11/2. You wouldn’t back him on pedigree but looks decent.

Ascot 5.35 – Segal has tipped Imperial Djay, a horse who has won a couple of big pots for me before and Global Village, who looks a solid bet. Docofthebay 20/1 has also won me a few decent prizes and he came close to winning this last year on soft and goes in 4lb this year. One other I want to call out is Gossamer Seed 20/1. Has serious formlines over tacky ground. If the Morrison horse gets back under 16/1 I’ll tuck in. Argh so many tempting ones. Thunderball 40/1 is too big but not good enough to win. Emilio Largo 12/1 is interesting but little form to go by.

Bets 21/06/2012 - Royal Ascot Day 3

Almost inevitably wasted my time with the Royal Hunt, and Segal finally pulled it out the bag with Duntle and he was not too far off lading a 25/1 with Hoyam. He saved me a pasting. So You Think was impressive, but I am fuming at the some bookies. I cannot believe some of them are only playing 3 places on races with 20 horses in it. Disgusting behaviour. People need to check how many places are being paid and if it’s beyond reasonable, boycott them. Jokers. I’m off to Ascot today and hope the drunken bets don’t emerge….

Ascot 2.30 – The top 2 in the betting have won this more times than not and Cay Verde looks like a worthy favourite especially with Hototo and Dylanburu franking form. At the time on writing this Gale Force Ten is 11/2 with Ladbrokes, but 9/1 with other firms. Didn’t work well with Devotion yesterday, but I’ll try again. Tom Segal from the Racingpost has also gone with the Ballydole horse.

Ascot 3.05 – I’ve watched The Oaks a few times and for me all about The Fugue. I have to pray the rain stays away though. Pricewise has selected Kailani 12/1.

Ascot 3.45 – All week I thought I’d be backing one from Sadler’s Rock, Opinion Poll or Colour Vision. Having looked more closely. Colour Vision has 8lb in hand when ran a blinder on Champions Day, but is my favourite for 2nd. I really don’t think Opinion Poll will stay. And Saddler Rock had 15lb in hand when beating Opinion Poll by 4 lengths. So really I’m all back to Fame and Glory. The Godolphin Yard just aren’t on it at the moment so it’s a tough one to work out who from the 3 will rock in 2nd. Maybe Neeham is worth considering for a big price place?

Ascot 4.25 – Let’s look for an outsider here. Bronze Angel has been aimed at this all year, so shortlisted. Racingpost’s Segal has plumped up Trader Jack 14/1 and Frog Hollow 12/1. He bums Frog Hollow – he’s picked him before, but so have I! He’s also drawn against rail which is a bonus. This could turn out to be another Royal Hunt, but also like the chance of Prince Alzain 16/1 after his last race

Ascot 5.00 – Starting with Pricewise’s pick Rewarded @16/1. Basically if Frog Hollow wins the 4.25 plough into this one to buck the form line. I’m with him. Starboard must go well, but I’m hoping Hughes rides a clever race with Crius @ 14/1. Going to use my £40 free bet on this.

Ascot 5.35 – Gabrial The Great has been aimed for this and Bell reckons this is his best chance of the meeting. I wrote all of this up last night so had no idea what Segal was going to tip, but he has tipped Gabrial The Great at 10/1. Need to watch previous race for form lines. Rougemont is massively overpriced @ 33/1. Have to give a stone away all round, but this OR suggests he can!

Right off to get soaked @Ascot

Bets 20/06/2012 - Royal Ascot Day 2

Coral paid 10/1 for Frankel to win by 10 lengths or more, and even though I wanted it I never believed that he’d win by 11 lengths! Frankel was scintillating! Tom Segal lost 6 out of 6. Congratulations. Seems to be no surprise lately. Oddly the bookies didn’t massively cut any of his selections yesterday. Makes me wonder. I just know that first race I don’t follow his selection, is the race it’ll win! Maybe I should just bite the bullet, as it’s not doing me any favours. Got far too clever in King’s Stands, and actually the ground was not too soft and three of the top rated horses romped home. Masamah was a non-runner, Sir Prancealot placed, but my two savings graces were Medicean Man, who I forgot I backed ante post after reading a pundit banter on about it in the RP and I have now backed for him the Wokingham and Most Improved really made me smile. I knew he’d come good eventually and after I saw BetVictor laid a £20,000 bet I went in again.

Kings Stand - Stalls of 1st 5 in race - 7,8,22,3,6 (Pace came from 9 and 23)
Windsor Castle Stakes – Stalls of 1st 5 in race -18,4,20,5,21 (Pace came from 5)

I.e. sack the worry about draw bias and find the pace. I know this, just need reminding of this sometimes!!!

Today, Tom ‘Pricewise’ Segal from the RacingPost has tipped:

Ascot 2.30 – Valbchek (8/1)
Ascot 4.25 – Belgian Bill (14/1), Dimension (12/1)
Ascot 5.00 – Hoyam (25/1)
Ascot 5.35 – Duntle (7/1)

***Tom Pricewise Segal Tips***
***My bets (Not tips)***
***Both agreed***

Ascot 2.30 – Ladbrokes aren’t bothered about Reply, and feels like O’Brien is finally having a comedown.  I don’t find it particularly easy finding an improver. Segal has tipped up Valbchek and looks a decent enough bet. The odds of previous winners suggests it pays not to look too far away in the betting, but for some reason Lethal Force @28/1 has drawn me in. Think will make the step up and Laffan and will provide the pace in stall next door. Lastly Aljmaaheer @5/1 winner of King Charles II which is a good trial, posted a decent time and looks set to go well.

Ascot 3.05 – Nahrain and Emulous are the two class acts in the race but both have penalties to carry. Have to confess Emulous looks the part, but I will take last year’s second Chachamaidee to go one better this year. Available at 11/2. Fanshawe watch with Captivator 20/1

Ascot 3.45 – So You Think may well hack up, but I can’t have him at 11/10 and Ladbrokes have no interest. I don’t hide my feelings for Carlton House either. I’ll take him at 7/2 any day, though I’m tempted to go each way with a bigger bet.

Ascot 4.25 – This is a ridiculous race to call. There are a lot of front runners (Boom and Bust in 3, Arabian Star in 9, Rock Critic in 12, and Brae Hill in 23). Sacked these out of the running, removed about 10 horses who aren’t near these horse. Sacked off the 7 and 8 year olds. Sacked off anything that not in good form this season. i.e. not finished in top 4 once this season. Still left with 10 horses! Taken out those who haven’t done well at Ascot or badly on Polytrack and then there were five! Invisible Man, Cai Shen, Edinburgh Knight, Mull of Killough, Dimension. Edinburgh Knight is out on basis won’t make trip. The SBS stable is not in form and I think Invisible Man in now too high in the weights, so tentatively taking out!

Now I don’t know if this is fate, or the same thought process I went through last time, but I’ve already backed Cai Shen @ 25/1 antepost and a nibble of Mull of Kill @ 20/1, Dimension @ 10/1, so actually feeling more confident about these now. Although inevitably this process will be a waste of time! If Fair Trade gets backed then watch out for the Shrewd Morrison. Segal has tipped Belgian Bill as well. I'om half tempted on Invisible Man still. Argh

Ascot 5.00 – Wachman’s record with 2yr olds is pretty impressive. Therefore Mironica is worth a punt at 7/1. Segal has tipped Hoyam, which is interesting because if you follow the form line it all points back to Graphic Guest @ 8/1 who should come out on top if you take it on paper. Difficult with such an unexposed bunch to asses on paper but if you do use stats then Channon is also someone to keep on side and his other runner is Jillnextdoor @ 16/1 who was just beat by yesterday’s Ascot winner Hototo. Hannon also has a decent record in this, but can’t choose between his 3 runners! Hmm.

Ascot 5.35 – This is the first time Ladbrokes have been clear stand out shortest price on an O’Brien horse at Ascot at 8/1. Stanjames are offering 12/1 Devotion, so I’m taking that hint and Hello Glory @ 10/1 interests me. Segal as tipped Duntle 7/1

James Fanshawe Lucky 15 – Sadly the prices for the Buckingham aren’t up yet, but I can still put Macs Power, Society Rock, Captivator and Dimension in an e/w Lucky 15. This guy has a sick record at the festival and is currently in banging form although following placing this bet found out he does even better with his older team.

Bets 19/06/2012 - Royal Ascot Day 1

Nooooooooo. Segal has tipped 6 horses today. I don't know what to do. That's £120 I need to consider against my fancies. Hmmm. I know what will happen if I don't back his choices, so without further ado for Day 1 at Royal Ascot, Tom 'Pricewise' Segal from the RacingPost has selected:

Ascot 3.05 - Wizz Kid (6/1)
Ascot 3.45 - The Nile (14/1), Fencing (12/1)
Ascot 5.00 - Elyaadi (9/1), Western Peal (16/1)
Ascot 5.35 - Parliament Square (12/1)

My thoughts just before lunch...

12.16pm update. Some wide open fields today. Ground and therefore draw might play a telling role and need to keep an eye for tomorrow, although if the ground changes, then it's back to square one.

Ascot 2.30 – Anyone dare to take on The Frankel? I think not. If I had to have a bet in this race, it’ll be the tricast Frankel, Excelebration and Strong Suit.

Ascot 3.05 – A number of interesting ones here. Masamah is 33/1 which is shocking on his best form behind Deacon Blues and with a solid C&D win behind him and the Straight Course Specialist Spencer on-board might be the value in the race. Sort of acts on GS but draw might hinder. Looks game over for Sole Power with the ground as it is. This is a step up in class for a number of these including Ponty Acclaim, Amour Propre and Stone of Folca and those stepping up in class to Group 1’s don’t have a great record. I’m a big Bated Breath fan but I just don’t know with the ground and didn’t necessarily have the best race here at Ascot. Last years’ winner Prohibit doesn’t seem to be in good order. Whiz Kid has been picked out by Tom Segal and was 12/1 a few days ago and would be my number 1 bet I think! Hoping Margot Did doesn’t perform as reason to think she might but the only other I back in this race and must have a good chance is Ortensia.
(3.00pm UPDATE - Might half bet Spirit Quartz or Ortensia if market keeps moving)

Ascot 3.45 – Segal has tipped Fencing and The Nile, neither of whom I would have otherwise bet on. I’ve been let down twice now by Most Improved and Born To Sea and I’m wondering whether this is where I need to go. Power has treated me well a couple of times, but I’m just not sure. Ladbrokes don’t seem too fussed about Power, so might let it go.

Ascot 4.25 – Those in the top 5 in the market dominate this race. Hannon 2 yr olds are flying. I’ve already backed Sir Prancealot antepost and both Hannon and Hughes really like this one. “Serious horse”. There is a wonder whether another Hannon horse will pop up, but I’ll stick with the yard’s number one. If you watch the race you will be massively impressed and just hope the ground doesn’t do anything to upset him and let’s hope nothing else in the Hannon yard pops up! Englishman has massive form lines from previous race including a Listed win by Cay Verde who finished 5th in that race. Must be a threat? Stats reckon you can sack off any horse who have run 3 or more races. All the money is for Sir Prancealot.

Ascot 5.00 – Segal has tipped Elyaadi (who finished 2nd 2 years ago 4lb higher) and Western Pearl. Last year’s winner may well struggle with a 7lb rise as ground will be heavier. Stats indicate backing Pipe and other jumps trainer horses, but I can’t see one I like. Maybe Fiulin?

Ascot 5.35 – No real interest in this. Segal has tipped Parliament Square, but again not sure how anyone can pick a winner in this. Lyric Ace looks like a good favourite e/w?

Royal Ascot Prep Notes

Sack what I said last week, despite the weather, despite work, despite the back of exposed dressage, I am uber uber animated about the next 5 days. The line ups look immense and there will be fireworks. I am in two minds whether to follow Segal or not. Seem to be doing okay without him. In fact I’m nearly £400 down with him, but we’ll see. Had a few cheeky antepost bets today, but nothing major. I am keen to use some stats on top of form this year. Let's hope the ground does not destroy the fun. Notes I gleaned from last year and the press this year…

·         Pipe - for staying races

·         Hannon - Second string horses. 2yr olds. Partnership with Hughes, non-handicaps, not above 1m2f and those that have come via Newbury, ridden by Dobbs or Hughes last time out. Not Moore

·         Fanshawe – Back all of his older horses

·         O’Briens horses who didn’t perform well last time at 2m tend to bounce back but not if over 17/2. Group 1 horses

·         Stoute – Avoid runners over 1m

·         Johnston – 1m2f-2m, lay if below, Group 3 horses best rated 96-103

·         Gosden – Lay handicaps, but look at Group 2s, fillies and mares Ribsdale and Sandringham

·         Bell - fillies and 3yr old handicaps

·         Morrison – handicaps especially those under 16/1

·         Wachman – 2 yr olds

·         Murtagh - over 1m, Group1, with Noseda, Fanshawe and Bell and partnered the horse before

·         Fortune - previous rides on a horse

·         Spencer - straight track only, lay on round track

·         Check previous Epsom form as a good indicator

·         Clear/Joint favourites coming from Curragh, Newmarkte, Newbury and Chester in non-handicaps only for Group 1 and 2 only 2 and 3 yr old only. Lay the other favourites

·         Royal Hunt Cup - Previous 5 winners got their RPR on polytrack- Dimension 10/1

·         Wokingham – winners have decent course form

·         All handicaps: Don’t back horses going from graded/listed down into handicap C1 and C2. Banded ‘ideal’ 8st8lb to 8st10lb band handicaps

·         All handicaps and 3 yr old handicaps from Haydock last run do well

·         3 yr old handicaps - those who stepped up in class do well

·         Group 1 - up/down 1 furlong, clear favourites do well, but lay runners who step up in class

·         Group 2 - those who contested previously in Group 2 don’t do well

·         Group races - Avoid runners from Goodwood and Windsor

·         Jersey Stakes, Queen Alexandra, Sandringham – Big price winners just outside top 2 in market

·         Buckingham Palace Stakes – Look for outsider

·         Draw – check impact after Day 1

·         Ribblesdale – Epsom Oaks favourite gone on to win 5 times – The Fugue

·         p.s. rain, rain go away

Week 18: Update on Ban Jay Desai

Initial Pot: £1500.00. Total Staked: £21,908.70, Total Returned: £26,298.90  = Profit: £4,390.20

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

Oops I did it again,
I disagreed with history, got lost in the form,
Oh jockey, jockey
Opps!...I think that I’ll win,
That I can win with just form,
It’s not that straight forward.

I make a habit of backing horses who have won the race in previous years. I have no idea why I bailed on Saturday but I lost out on a convincing 10/1 Crackentorp. I’ve done this 3 times this year now, hence my Britney rendition. Sorry, my appealing rendition. Very annoying as Fennell Bay and Navajo Chief won at 12/1 and 13/2 and both were in my trebles with Crackentorp. Segal continues to flop and I can’t seem to blow through the £4,500 mark.

Ascot is two days away and Tuesday opens with Frankel. There’s no value in backing Frankel unless you can chuck wedges at him but I look forward to a solid tricast with Excelebration and Strong Suit. There’s little point in any hard Antepost betting as just don’t know what the ground is going to turn out like with this horrendous weather but I’m going to dig our all my Ascot notes tomorrow in prep for 5 mental days. I’ll be there on Thursday and Saturday in the New Furlong Club. Excited now, even if I am nowhere near being banned by another bookies.

Bets 17/06/2012

Chantilly 2.45 - Segal has tipped Kissed to win the Prix De DL in Chantilly today. Ladbrokes aren't convinced and as she was never being aimed for the race it's the other O'Brien horse, Up that I would back. However Beauty Parlour could be the real deal. She could be the next Zarkarva.

Total Staked £50.00, Total Returned £0.00

£30.00 Beauty Parlour 1/1 - PLACED £0.00
£10.00 e/w Up 12/1 - LOSE £0.00

Bets 16/06/2012

It’s not been a great last 10 days. Am verging on a 10% strike rate which is shocking. Not looking forward to Ascot if the weather remains this butters. And for the first time in a long time, not really looking forward to betting today. Perhaps just need Tom Segal to pull his finger out and get me a winner. I’ve been paying his way for months now and surely he’ll bounce back at some point? Today his picks are:

York 2.35 – Hillviewboy (10/1)
York 3.10 - Intransigent (10/1), Nameitwhatyoulike (20/1)

My views after a kip and hopefully will come back looking forward to punting, else it’s never a good omen!

12.51pm post last morning kip, feeling better, despite knowing this is a tough day with wide open handicaps!...

Sandown 2.20 – Hannon reckons Hefner could be on a decent mark and with his lot doing so well I’ll nibble 14/1

Sandown 2.50 – I backed Fennell Bay last time out only to be disappointed. I think the step back down in trip is just what he needs.

Sandown 3.25 – Pearl Secret looks a solid recruit and only winner today, with Ballesteros a NR now.

York 2.05 – I’m really surprised Cape Safari is 20/1. Her form over soft ground is phenomenal and 3yr olds have once this twice before. There are a couple of problems though. One an amateur jockey race and a couple of decentish horses including Crackentorp and Eagle Rock and one coming back from a long absence in Ascalon. I’ll wait to see what the market makes of this one. Only looking to back Cape Safari though.

York 2.35 – Last night I shortlisted Halfsin, Navajo Chief and Hillview Boy. Segal has picked the latter and Goldie has put in a positive word today. Navajo Chief has a solid record here and decent form but Botti’s horse Halfsin looks the one for me.

York 3.10 – Nameitwhatyoulike is going to have a solid chance here. I don’t always see the reasoning behind Segals punting, but I do with this one but is going to have to make all. We saw yesterday that those held up in the sprints failed to make the ground up with the sticky conditions, so hoping this one will have the same luck. He has also tipped Intransigent. Botti thought that Bartolomeu was well handicapped which puts Glen Moss right up there with a chance.

York 3.45 – I’ve got my fingers crossed for Dance and Dance. This will be all about tactics and I think Dance and Dance is just about the better horse in the race. Tullius will do well to win with a penalty and Fortune will really have to grind him out again.

York 5.15 – Go Go Green was running on at Muss’b so step up in trip with Fallon onboard should mean solid chance.

York 3.05 – Mark Tompkins has knocked in a couple of big priced winners this month and although Smokey Oakey is now an old boy and does look regressive, he has Grade 3 victories next to his name, loves soft ground, so 33/1 is a little generous.

York 4.10 – Wow. This is tough. High draws don’t tend to do well, but Long Awaited will have the rail and Judge n Jury will provide the pace a few stalls down. Long awaited has won on soft/heavy and on should reverse placings with JnJ on weights. Medici Time won this last year and can run of a similar mark and has form with cut in the ground as well. Haajes is another I like but can I back all 3? Hmm.

£10.00 e/w Haajes 18/1 - LOSE £0.00

Haydock 3.50 - Very Good Day should not be double figures. Simples. Has some good form lines in Class 2 races and think is better than Ittirad looking at it on paper who is 4/1.

£10.00 e/w Very Good Day 9/2 - LOSE £0.00

Warning from BHA

"A TWO YEAR OLD WARNING ON THE APPROACH TO ROYAL ASCOT

In an ideal spring the 2yo form builds brick by brick into a solid wall that bears weight. This year, instead of bricks, we have puddles of mud, writes Matthew Tester

For one thing so much of the heavy ground form is useless in judging fast ground races. For another thing, some of the biggest strings of 2yos took ages to hit form. My impression is that those of Mark Johnson and Richard Fahey, for example, have not yet caught fire.

Time and again there is just nothing from which to build a rating. The winner beats a bunch of newcomers and something that tailed off on very different ground last time. The speed figures are less help than usual since rain throughout a day can completely skew the figures.

I have been looking after the 2yos for quite a while and have never known a tougher year for building the foundations. Royal Ascot might make things clearer and I am particularly looking forward to seeing Ahern, Sky Lantern, Dawn Approach and Sir Prancelot."

Glad I'm not the only nervous one. Could lose a shed load of dollar to anything.

Week 17: Update on Ban Jay Desai

Initial Pot: £1500.00. Total Staked: £21,281.50, Total Returned: £25,692.44  = Profit: £4,410.94

Week = Frustrating. Last Thursday and Friday was capitulation is full flow. On Saturday landed a 16/1 and 8/1, but NOTHING else. I can’t seem to pick a winning favourite at the moment. More frustratingly I mentioned the Hannon juveniles are romping home but keep picking the wrong ones! Argh. And to round it all off Hughes openly said he’d be very disappointed if Cresta Star didn’t win. Forgot to back it and it won at 5/1.

The weather is also frustrating. Uber frustrating. It’s really doing my nut. Non-runners all over the place and it means I can’t back anything in the Ascot Antepost Market with confidence. Interested in Englishman in the Coventry Stakes at the moment and surely nothing will beat Black Caviar or Frankel but there’s zero value in backing the Queen and King of racing, unless you punt serious wonga. I almost certainly won’t back Fame and Glory in the Gold Cup. Ladbrokes aren’t interested in this one and Colour Vision, Opinion Poll and Saddlers Rock have massive chances. 1 week to go. Woop. I want to breach the 5k mark.

Bets 09/06/2012

Had another shocker yesterday. Not assessed the full damage but think lost 8/9 races. Ekk. Today looks horrendous, and I hope I don't get too involved as want to save the coppers for Ascot. However, Tom Pricewise Segal from the RacingPost has tipped:

Newmarket 2.55 - Shropshire 12/1
Newmarket 4.00 - Vasily 14/1

My thoughts after some more sleep....

12.50pm update....

Chantilly 4.50 – Coupe De Ville

Chester 2.00 – One for Desai Jnr who bums Koukash. Sugar Hiccup.

Chester 2.35 – Imperial Djay landed me a nice 9/1 a couple of weeks ago and I think would go in again at only 4lb higher.

Chester 3.10 – Looks between License To Till and Resurge. The former finished behind a decent Gatewood but depends how handles C&D today. The latter again finished behind Gatewood, but does handle C&D. Somewhat banking on the Gatewood form, but it’s an impressive one.

Chester 4.50 – Sonko

Newmarket 2.20 – Deia Sunrise could bounce back to reproduce form here like he did 1 month ago which would give him a good chance. Was hoping Campanology was dropped a bit more in weight after his last so will just keep an eye on him today. I’m finding Apostle hard to ignore but again might be too high in the weights.

Newmarket 2.55 – The RP pundits  and Tom Segal seem to be very keen on Shropshire and can somewhat see why. He is technically running with 10lb more than time here I would prefer some dollar on Pearl Ice who looks sick. Breathless Kiss wouldn’t be the worst longshot punt at 50/1.

Newmarket 3.30 – If Romeo Montague behaves himself could be in with a shout.

Newmarket 4.00 -  Mulaqen was uber impressive last time out and hope the 13lb rise won’t stop the progress. Tom Segal has picked out Vasily.

Newmarket 4.35 – Hannon kids are showing their class, so maybe Pearl Acclaim is the one to be on? Maybe a half bet as I’ve stopped backing horses with no formlines. It’s daft.

Doncaster 3.45 – As long it is not too soft Louis The Pious can go close again.

3/3 losers yesterday. Nice. Rain is c0ck1ng everything up. That's not my excuse for yesterday, but I'm just praying Ascot will not be like this.

Catterick 3.45 – Tentative vote to Lucky Numbers.

Doncaster 7.45 – Hmm. Ashva certainly shouldn’t be 18/1, but not sure is good enough to win. Should probably wait to see the rain damage but I’ll be fully fixated on Euro 2012 this evening. Honeymead might be the value.

Doncaster 8.50 – Again should wait, but I’ll be watching Lewandowski score a hatrick. Askaud shouldn’t be 25/1 but again not sure is good enough to win. The favourite Qaraaba looks decent.

Goodwood 6.50 – Last year’s winner Porgy 9/1 to hack up?

Goodwood 8.00 – Whipcrackway 8/1 after impressive hack up here

Goodwood 8.30 – Not sure why Vocational has been allowed a 10lb drop, but won’t complain and slap on with his G1 entry.

Newmarket 4.30 – Argh. Chippendale and Jungle Beat have lost me money this year. I’m not really sure why but seem to be drawn to Fennell Bay

“Gamble landed”. Sahrati came in from 20’s into 9/4 to hack up by 12 lengths yesterday! So yes, gamble landed. Well done Christopher Ash, you sly dog. Yesterday Advanced really was good place value at 25's. Few more Class 4+ races to pick through today.

Sandown 6.50 – A lot depends on how well Expose has developed over the long absence but might be worth taking on. According to drawbias.com it pays to stick to low numbers when soft. That rules out my short list of Rowe Park and Italian Tom and points me towards Signifier. I’m not really feeling this race though, feels tough.

Sandown 7.25 – A number of unexposed horses here, however I like the look of the favourite, Tartiflette. Solid form with Gregorian, well drawn and likes it soft, also excuses in last race. 9/4 good price.

Lady Loch was a good ‘steal’ at 12/1 yesterday. Looking forward to watch the King and Queen run at Ascot…“Black Caviar will ‘walk up’…the race is probably the worst she has run in…there’s nothing capable of putting her to the test. She has no peers.”

Ripon 8.10 – Advanced has won off a mark of 107, won over C&D, ran a blinder @ Donny in April behind Colonel Mak and a return to good ground means at 25/1 this is decent place value. Roker Park at 20/1 which also offers some interesting value. Should definitely not be longer than Cocktail Charlie looking at form lines with Star Rover as the marker. He will have to be ridden far sooner than usually is ridden to get involved though and just have to put faith in the jockey to do so.  I’m twitching to back Fast Shot as well who has decent form.

I wanted to keep hitting New Approach yesterday and feel annoyed I didn’t but I know that’s a naughty game. A couple I want to play with today.

Leicester 3.15 – I can’t help but think Lady Loch is well handicapped. Had a bit of a mare in previous race, but a few behind her here in Leicester are around the 80 mark now, so could be a steal at 12/1 here in first time blinkers. Uprise has some form behind Bonfire and Cubinata so again first time visor could be the clicking point.

Redcar 3.45 – Beauty Pageant is returning to conditions where she will cherish and 14/1 feels too big especially with a 7lb claim. I nearly backed Bedloes Island at 7/1 last night and I wish I would have now. I don’t think an 8lb rise in this class will stop a close attempt whereas not fully convinced that Bosun Breeze can brush off his rise.

O’Brien, Pacemakers or Front Runners and Immense Stupidity

“Aidan O'Brien was the Champion Amateur Jockey of 1993/94, the same season in which he trained his first winner, on his first day as a licensed Trainer. In 1996, he would become Ireland's youngest ever Champion Trainer, a title he has now held continuously since 1998. In 2001, he became the youngest ever Champion British Trainer, and the first overseas holder of the title since, well, since one Dr. M.V. O'Brien”. Guess we now watch this space for Joseph. What a family, but a family I still can’t get a handle on. I’ve faired better this year than previous years with the yard’s horses and I think I’ve nearly sussed it. All you need is two bullets in your gun. Ladbrokes and the Front Runner.

Ladbrokes were the shortest priced bookie in the days leading up to the applicable races for the big guns; Camelot, St Nicolas Abbey, Camelot again and Power. Interestingly enough they were not the shortest on Maybe (both times) and when Homecoming Queen and St Nicolas Abbey lost their respective races this season. So that takes care of when to back a Ballydole favourite. Now the Ballydole long shots. Simples. When there is more than one Ballydole runner simply back the secret front runner a.k.a. the pacemaker; probably the least favoured horse in the race, but this is not always the homing missile. Homecoming Queen 25/, Windsor Palace 66/1, Was 20/1, and sure there are others I can’t remember and a number who placed as well such as Astrology in this year’s Derby and At First Sight (100/1) in 2010 Derby. Sorted!? I’m certainly not going to shy away from backing the big-priced ones anymore especially if there are no genuine front runners in the race. Clearly if you have a Danedream or an Overturn or and an Alleged, etc. then this might fall down.

Now onto the stupidity. It’s so daft, utterly foolish, and insanely unbelievable, it’s laughable. All week I’ve been aroused at the prospect of winning £500 on an immense £10 Treble with Bated Breath, winner of Temple Stakes (100/30), Power, winner of Irish 2k Guineas (5/1) and Camelot, winner of the Derby. I even laid Camelot after Bated Breath and Power hacked up so it was a win-win situation. But guess what? Guess bloody what!!? My treble was Bated Breath, Power and Homecoming Queen! TWAT! Why, oh why I never checked, I’ll never know! GUTTED! Another O’Brien catastrophe for me…

Self-deprecation in unhealthy, but this is warranted. I’m a moron. That Reiss suit in Westfield will just have to hang there a little while longer…

Mental race in France yesterday. Far too many horses for a race of that quality and luck in running foiled many. A couple of races want to tuck into today, but nothing overly exciting.

Carlisle 4.05 – Embsay Crag has a more experienced jockey in Graham Lee on-board today and at 9/1 is far too big. If he gets going sooner is going to have a great chance in this field. After backing this at 9/1, totally coincidently, appears like the market has found him too. 5/1 in places. Could be a good sign!?

Leicester 3.40 – Choral looks to have overcome the stamina block as a 3 yr old so 8/1 looks interesting with Moore on board.

Naas 3.00 – Croisultan is the class act in this race and 7/1 is surely worth a dabble? He hasn’t performed well at Cork but split Windsor Palace and Excelebration is last decent race.

Naas 4.10 – New Approach looks solid, solid, solid.

Redcar 3.55 – Navajo Chief has solid each way claims as is a massive step down in class. I backed Danadana at 9/4 last night as well. Cumani won this race 2 years ago and the 9lb rise is tough but hopefully
